You might be mistaken to think that this refers to the much awaited national elections. Well, if rumours are to be believed, it should be around the corner. But we are not talking about this here. A far more less important, certainly with far less repercussions and absolutely more fun than the political one. Or so one might be led to believe….

For those of you not in the know (one can be so ignorant in HT and yet be forgiven), the National Team (NT) manager position will be vacant on 5 November. With the recent success of our U-20 team in qualifying for the U-20 WC, the popularity of national office bearer has risen. And with the spotlight now being turned on the NT position, I would bet that there will be a lot more interest in the coming elections than we’ve ever had in the past 4-5 seasons.

There have already being talks and rumours buzzing among the local HT community on the emergence of possible candidates for this “cursed” NT position. Who says holding public office and being in the public eye has its glamour and “kickbacks”? I say this is a doomed position because of the success of Toong! He has set the standard this season, and we want our NT to follow a similar path of success. I don’t care if we will ever win the World Cup, but let’s get there first. Easier said than done. Now, I am beginning to think the word “cursed” may be too kind.

So, what’s going to be different about this election than those before it? The answer lies with all of us. Yes, don’t look at others, look at ourselves! We are the difference. We make the difference. You, me and everyone else. If it matters to you, it will matter to everyone. The buck stops here, no more pushing it around. It doesn’t matter if you have played the game for years or for days. Each of us is a part of the Malaysian HT community. And the best of all, we have one vote each to exercise our desire and vision for the community.

So, come on out in droves, exercise your rights and do the right thing. And hopefully we can build on this for a more vibrant and noisy community. See you at the polls!
